What is Energy?
- Energy is the ability to cause change in an object.
- Energy can be stored and Transferred but not used up.
- The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transferred.
- There are many different types of energy (Big ones being potential and kinetic).
- Energy is kind of in everything

Different Types of Energy
Kinetic Energy - Labeled as Ke. Energy measured by motion and mass of an object. The object has to be in motion to have Kinetic Energy.
Potential Energy - Labeled as U and is the energy based on position. Aka stored up energy waiting to be put to work.
Mechanical Energy - Kinetic Energy + Potential Energy
Gravitational Potential Energy - Labeled as GPE or Ug. Measured by the amount of distance between two objects. Dependent on the height and the gravitational field.
Internal Energy - Labeled as Uint. Measured by temperature.
Chemical Energy - Labeled as Uchem. The type of energy stored to go through a chemical reaction.
Elastic Energy - Labeled as Us (pretend the s stands for stretch). Energy stored in an elastic force field, like a rubber band sling shot. Measured by the stretch or compression. It is effected by the spring constant.

Energy Transfers
- Through working, an external push or pull.
- Radiation, like a micro wave.
- Through heating, a temperature change that causes a transfer of energy.

LOL Chart
LOL Charts are used to show the transfer of energy in a system. Whether it is energy leaving or being added to the system, or transfers from different types of energy. We used LOL charts to have a better understanding and to calculate the systems energy much easier. The first L or the bar graph is the energy starting in the system. The O is the energy leaving or being added to the system. The second L or graph is the final energy. Make sure to do this every time.
